"We should mutually teach and learn from each other, without shame or pride" (Yukichi Fukuzawa). This quote is from one of the most influential thinkers and educators in modern Japan and expresses the feelings I had during this experience. My name is Adriana de Jesús Salazar Sarria (a little bit long, I know, but that is what makes Latin American names great) from Chiclayo, Peru. I am currently in the 10th grade at Colegio de Alto Rendimiento de Lambayeque, which translates to "Lambayeque's High-Performance School." Thanks to this school, I finally had the opportunity to participate in this excellent exchange program in May 2023!
I was invited to join the Sakura Science Exchange Program during the holidays in my country in 2023. It was my first time traveling abroad, and I could not help but feel grateful for this experience.
Through the SSP, I had the opportunity to interact with scientists and researchers from diverse backgrounds, exchanging ideas and knowledge. This exposure to different scientific perspectives and methodologies has greatly enriched my understanding of various scientific disciplines. I have gained invaluable insights into cutting-edge research and technological advancements, particularly the potential of Japanese technological advances. Learning about sustainable technology and environmentally friendly solutions has ignited a passion within me to contribute to a more sustainable future.
Moreover, the intercultural aspect of the program has been truly eye-opening. Engaging with participants from different countries, I have developed a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and the importance of embracing different perspectives. This experience has enhanced my intercultural communication skills and fostered a global mindset, which I believe is crucial in today's interconnected world. It has also inspired me to pursue a career in international relations, where I can promote cross-cultural understanding and collaboration on a global scale.
Despite my newfound interest in international relations, my passion for biology remains unwavering. The SSP has reinforced my dedication to the study of life sciences. It has exposed me to groundbreaking research and introduced me to esteemed scientists who have inspired me to pursue further studies in biology. I am determined to deepen my knowledge in this field and contribute to scientific advancements that can address pressing global challenges, such as environmental conservation and public health.
Looking ahead, my future goals have been shaped by the transformative experience of the SSP. I aspire to study abroad, immersing myself in different academic and cultural environments. Ultimately, I envision myself as an ambassador in Japan, bridging the gap between cultures and facilitating scientific collaborations between nations, highlighting the celebration of 150 years of diplomatic relations between Peru and Japan!
I am deeply grateful for the opportunities and support provided by the SSP. This program has had a profound impact on my knowledge, skills, and cultural understanding. I am determined to give back as a future ambassador in Japan, fostering connections, facilitating the exchange of scientific knowledge, and promoting cultural understanding.
