The Faculty of Collaborative Regional Innovation has been working with IITH on international educational and research projects centered on sports data analysis. This year as well, with support from the Japan Science and Technology Agency’s Sakura Science Program, we welcomed IITH students to Ehime and carried out a two-week program of learning and exchange. Open Application Program University India Course B vol.13 FY2025University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan "A Joint Research Project for the Advancement of Occupational Medicine" We hosted five participants from Taiwan: two graduate students, two undergraduate students, and one accompanying faculty member. The research theme was “Joint Research with China Medical University for the International Implementation of Occupational Health Research and Health and Productivity Management.” We shared good practices of occupational health management for evaluating factors causing health hazards among workers, and explored the potential for international expansion of health and productivity management. Open Application Program University Taiwan Course B vol.12 FY2025Hokkaido University "Programme for Future Scientists in Nano and Molecular Sciences" A group of students from 5 different institutes in India have been provided with an exceptional opportunity to engage directly with advanced research laboratories, interact with leading scientists, and explore ongoing international research initiatives across physics, chemistry, materials science, biology, and several interdisciplinary domains. The week-long program included intensive laboratory interactions, research demonstrations, hands-on experiments, and opportunities to discuss future collaborations with senior faculty at RIES. Open Application Program University India Course A vol.11 FY2025Shimane University "Promoting Interdisciplinary Education through the Integration of Earth Science and Cultural Heritage" We welcomed Dr. Ratheesh Kumar R.T. and six graduate students from the Department of Marine Geology and Geophysics at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), India. The program included scientific exchange, geological fieldwork, and cultural immersion. It centered on interdisciplinary learning and hands-on geological research, with participants exploring Matsue City, specifically Katsurajima and Daikonjima, to provide an ideal natural laboratory for observing and analyzing volcanic activity and coastal geomorphology. Open Application Program University India Course A vol.10 FY2025The University of Tokyo "Creation and Practice of the “Convergence of Knowledge” A New Role for the Humanities and Social Sciences" The Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology/Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo invited 8 graduate students from the University of Delhi from November 16 to 22, 2025. This invitation program was implemented with the aim of providing students from the University of Delhi with opportunities to directly observe and experience such research practices, thereby deepening their understanding of emerging possibilities in the humanities and social sciences, while further promoting academic exchange between India and Japan. Open Application Program University India Course A vol.9 FY2025Hokkaido University "Activity Report of the Sakura Science Exchange Program JST 2025" The Geospatial Research Lab at Hokkaido University, brought seven students and one staff member from Chennai Institute of Technology, India, for a week-long academic and cultural exchange. Held from October 19 to 25, 2025, the program aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of geospatial science, drone technology, environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, and interdisciplinary research through lectures, laboratory visits, fieldwork, and cultural exposure. Open Application Program University India Course A vol.8 FY2025Takasaki University of Health and Welfare "Exploring Rapid and Optimal Disaster Relief — Creating a Sustainable Society through the Use of Advanced Technology" We welcomed eight students from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (three from Public Health, three from Pharmacy, and two from Medical Technology) and carried out an exchange program aimed to learn about the disaster-related scientific and technological advancements developed in Japan, where natural disasters frequently occur. The program also sought to deepen understanding and improve disaster response capacities that may be required in their own country. Open Application Program University Vietnam Course A vol.7 FY2025Okayama University "Research Exchange with Young Indian Researchers on the Theme of Fundamentals, Environmental Adaptation, and Applications of Photosynthesis" We invited eight young researchers and graduate students from Nagaland University and related institutions in Nagaland, India and implemented a course A program. Despite being a short-term program, we were able to conduct meaningful academic exchange on the fundamentals, environmental adaptation, and applications of photosynthesis at both Okayama University and Kyoto University. The participants also had valuable opportunities to experience Japanese culture and history in Okayama and Kyoto. Open Application Program University India Course A vol.6 FY2025Nagasaki University "Membrane Separation Technology Training for Safe Water Production from Contaminated Water Sources" The Nagasaki University welcomed eight participants to Nagasaki from Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia, University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi; and Chiang Mai University, Thailand. This program, conducted through collaboration between industry, academia, and government, provided training on Japan's advanced water treatment technology, with the goal of enhancing the participants' membrane separation technology skills and preparing them for a return to Japan as researchers or engineers. Open Application Program University Indonesia Vietnam Thailand Course C vol.5 FY2025Tokyo University of Science "Sustainable Urban Disaster Prevention Considering Multi-Hazard Risks" From August 21 to 27, 2025, we hosted a delegation from SRM Institute of Science and Technology in India, consisting of seven students and one faculty member. The program aimed to nurture future disaster management experts capable of addressing the growing global challenges of natural disasters. Through lectures, facility visits, and workshops, participants deepened their understanding of disaster prevention from both theoretical and practical perspectives.
