How did Sakura Science Plan play a role in your study / research in Japan?
The Sakura Science Plan (SSP) exchange program was designed to introduce/give overview of several research fields being done in Kochi University. They also allow the participants to have hands on experience on some of the techniques being used in different research topics. In addition, they also introduce Japanese culture and have a lot of experience on Japanese food. As one of the participants of this program, this helps me get to know a number of professors, have an idea of Japanese culture and its environment, and more importantly, it gaves me an opportunity to meet my current supervisor.
Please describe your comments freely related to your life in Japan.
I've been staying in Japan for more than a year already. I am lucky to be chosen as one of the MEXT scholars. This sholarship allows me to continue my graduate studies in Kochi University as a PhD student, which is a great help upon returning to my home country. I am currently studying on the early life history of deep water fishes in Tosa Bay. This topic is interesting and at the same time difficult as this area is different from what I've studied during my master's thesis. I truly appreciate the guidance of my supervisor, his support, and encouragement. His teachings help me gain more knowledge about my research topic. All of my colleagues and lab mates, both Japanese and international students, are all approachable and helpful especially during field surveys.
Please describe your message to people who are going to participate in this program.
For the junior students and incoming Sakura Science Plan participants, enjoy your short stay in Japan. Talk to many professors whom you think can help you with your current research, can create some collaboration with your home university and don't be afraid to speak about your plan to obtain post graduate studies in the near future.
