How did Sakura Science Plan play a role in your study / research in Japan?

It was the first time for me to go abroad when I joined SSP in October 2016. I hesitated at the crossroad at that time, because I was about to graduate with a master's degree. Working or studying further? That was a significant choice which disturbed my mind for a long time. SSP trip was just like a bonus that appeared in my path and invisibly led me to somewhere. During the trip, Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI) and Tsukuba University were the main places we visited. What impressed me most was the favorable research environment and the strict working attitude of researchers. Now, I am honored to be a member of Tsukuba University. For me, SSP trip was the gateway to a new experience. I really appreciate for all the support I’ve been getting.

Please describe your comments freely related to your life in Japan.

I enrolled in Tsukuba Ｕniversity in April, 2018. The School has an overall setup that help freshman to know about how to make an application, study in your department, ask for help and so on, thus, I accommodated to the new situation soon.

My professor, Tsumura sensei, is a learned, earnest and patient person. I had always been able to count on his wise counsel. Fortunately, PhD students in my office from Indonesia are also kind and warm. Sometimes we entered a frank discussion about one research issue, sometimes talked about culture of each other’s countries. Seminar is the normal routine every week, but we have so much professional curriculum in doctoral project, therefore, it’s a little bit hard for me to keep pace with other students.

Living in Japan is costly compared to in China. Scholarship is limited, especially in the first year. If the university may provide several part-time jobs to international students, for instance, working in the nursery, I should be grateful indeed.

Please describe your message to people who are going to participate in this program.

For young people, I think the most important thing is enjoying the process of trying out many possibilities, finding your interest, and doing what you like. It’s very difficult to get our destined path. So just go out and try it.

As the most widely spoken language, English is a significant skill along our life. To be proficient in English will benefit us a lot, not only for career, but also for our view of the world. Reading is also a good habit for youth. If we couldn’t afford to travel round the world, reading as many books as possible is necessary. It’s helpful for us to know the world and to imagine the future.
