How did Sakura Science Plan play a role in your study / research in Japan?

Being chosen as one of the participants to go to Japan under the Sakura Science Program in 2017 greatly helped in expanding my pool of valuable experience and opportunities, especially as a fresh graduate student from the Philippines. Through the program, I was exposed to various research and academic activities in the Institute of Laser Engineering (ILE) at Osaka University. My immersion in the program jumpstarted my budding career as a scientist when I revisited Osaka University in 2018 as a joint graduate researcher for a collaboration project between my university and the ILE.

Please describe your comments freely related to your life in Japan.

Familiarity with the people, local university, and the culture that comes with revisiting Japan certainly improved my overall experience during my stay. I was able to interact with my seniors and make new friends in the laboratory, which contributed to a better working experience. Due to the longer stay, I was also able to enjoy exploring the university and the nearby places to discover local cuisines and meet fellow colleagues and friends in other departments. From learning parts of Japanese history in Osaka Castle to enjoying celebrations with friends and peers, each day in Japan was a worthwhile experience.
