OIST Science Challenge
Johannes Nicolaus Wibisana Updated in May 2024

Choosing where to pursue a PhD is a significant decision, and understanding the environment you will be entering is crucial. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) offers several programs designed to immerse young scientists in its research environment. Among these is the OIST Science Challenge, an annual one-week workshop in early spring aimed at bachelor and master students from Japanese universities. This workshop, which I will delve into, offers a comprehensive introduction to OIST and the benefits of participation. Further details can be found at: https://groups.oist.jp/sciencechallenge

Aimed at STEM majors, the workshop provides a platform for students to familiarize themselves with OIST through scientific activities and community interaction. Participants engage in lab tours to explore current research, partake in hands-on scientific experiments—such as fertilization experiments with marine planktons, an activity I organized—and attend seminars and talks tailored to STEM students. These sessions cover a range of topics, from research presentation tips to discussions about career paths and most importantly, life at OIST.

The workshop culminates with participants delivering presentations, with awards for the best ones. Despite its packed schedule, the week offers a valuable glimpse into science and research practices at OIST.

From my interactions with past participants, I've seen many secure internships or even become PhD students at OIST, highlighting the workshop's role as a stepping stone for aspiring researchers.

Admission is competitive, with only 25 slots available each year. Applicants must write an essay on a yearly theme, judged on passion, curiosity, creativity, and clarity. While competitive, this should not deter interested students. If you're contemplating a research career and considering OIST for your PhD, this workshop is an excellent opportunity.
