Report from SAAI─SSTIA (Sakura Science Technology & Innovation Award) Winners Recap Activity at the ASEAN Secretariat

On October 1, 2023, the Sakura Science Alumni Association in Indonesia (SAAI) proudly announced the winners of the Sakura Science, Technology, and Innovation Award (SSTIA 2023). To honor their achievements, the winners were invited to a significant event at the ASEAN Secretariat, symbolizing an important milestone in the journey of SSTIA. This visit not only celebrated their accomplishments but also highlighted the values of innovation, collaboration, and cultural exchange, which are central to the Sakura Science program.

The SSTIA 2023 winners, accompanied by SAAI coordinators, engaged in a series of insightful and memorable activities during their visit to the ASEAN Secretariat. We were welcomed by Mr. Dony, Mr. Nathan, and Ms. Angel from the ASEAN Secretariat representatives and below are the names of the winners and the coordinators of SAAI who joined the event:

A key highlight of the visit was the introduction and discussion session involving the winners, SAAI coordinators, and ASEAN representatives. The participants delved into topics such as the mission and operations of the ASEAN Secretariat, and its role in fostering regional unity.

The discussion provided a unique opportunity for attendees to exchange ideas, broaden their perspectives, and explore innovative ways to contribute to ASEAN’s goals for sustainable development and scientific advancement in the region. This dialogue fostered a deeper appreciation for ASEAN’s multifaceted role and underscored the shared aspirations for regional progress.

Exploration of the New ASEAN Secretariat’s Modern Facilities The visit also included a guided tour of the ASEAN Secretariat's cutting-edge building, inaugurated in 2019. The facility embodies the vision of a modern, dynamic ASEAN, reflecting its commitment to fostering collaboration among its member states.

The ASEAN Secretariat Merchandise Area
This vibrant section displayed a variety of items celebrating the rich cultural heritage of ASEAN member countries. From handcrafted souvenirs to contemporary merchandise, it offered a glimpse into the diverse traditions and creativity of the region.

The ASEAN Secretariat’s Gallery
This gallery houses an extraordinary collection of art, gifts, and cultural artifacts, presented to ASEAN by nations and dignitaries worldwide. The exhibition not only highlights ASEAN's diplomatic engagements but also serves as a cultural bridge, showcasing the unity and diversity of its member states. The tour offered participants an enriching experience, providing both knowledge and inspiration about ASEAN's vision for unity amidst diversity.

The ASEAN Canteen
To conclude the day, attendees gathered at the Secretariat’s newly refurbished canteen, renowned for its diverse culinary offerings. The canteen features an array of dishes, ranging from traditional ASEAN delicacies to international favorites, catering to varied palates.

Participants relished the opportunity to savor authentic flavors representative of the ASEAN region. This culinary experience fostered camaraderie among the attendees, creating lasting memories and embodying the spirit of togetherness that ASEAN represents.

Conclusion
The SSTIA 2023 winners' visit to the ASEAN Secretariat was an inspiring and enlightening experience. It celebrated their remarkable achievements while deepening their connection to ASEAN’s vision of unity, development, and cultural appreciation. This event exemplified the mission of SSTIA and SAAI to nurture a community that values collaboration, innovation, and cultural understanding. As the winners return with new insights and strengthened bonds, the Sakura Science program continues to pave the way for meaningful contributions to regional growth and cooperation.
