In late 2024, my exchange trip to the University of Tokyo began, allowing me to enjoy the Sakura Science Program (SSP) fully. This trip, however, was not just an exchange. It changed the way I look at research, interdisciplinary cooperation, and the way I use technology to address social issues.

As an assistant professor, I conduct research in extended reality (XR), particularly on new interaction models and the usability and improvement of systems. However, after visiting several research laboratories in Japan, I was struck by how research is conducted in alignment with social empathy, especially in the fields of PC, human interaction, visualization, and social concern. Relevant discussions with Japanese researchers prompted me to redirect my XR research toward the intersection of healthcare and education and to initiate an ongoing project advocating the use of versatile reality simulators for role-play to improve healthcare professionals' skills in the dementia care unit.

The program also allowed me to network with enthusiastic professionals and researchers, many of whom I still collaborate with today. From participating in the various cultural activities offered by the hosts, I learned that international collaborations start with curiosity and respect for one another. These experiences, although not part of the program's objectives, help shape us as researchers and educators.

At the moment, I am focusing on incorporating more human-centered design approaches into XR systems while inspiring my students to think more holistically to design beyond the technology itself. I want to eventually bind the research communities of Indonesia and Japan, specifically in the area of immersive technology, education, and health, more tightly.

My academic experience in the Sakura Science Program made me realize that integrating technology and humanity champions innovation. It was more than enriching my education; it ignited an ambitious form of purpose I am still pursuing today. I appreciate the opportunity and hope to enhance the program's spirit going forward.
