A Heartfelt Gratitude for an Unforgettable Journey

I am Sumedha Bakshi, a Class 12 student from Ahmedabad, Gujarat and I had the immense honor of representing India in the Sakura Science High School Program (SSHP) held in Tokyo, Japan from October 21 to 25, 2024. It was not just a visit to a new country but a transformative chapter in my life.

I extend my deepest thanks to the Japan Science and Technology Agency for offering me this extraordinary opportunity. Your warmth, hospitality, and organization made every moment of the program truly special. From the first orientation session to the heartfelt closing ceremony, I felt not like a guest, but a welcomed member of a global family of ambitious and like-minded students united by the love of science and the hope for a better world.
The program redefined the way I view science. Earlier, it was a subject I excelled in academically. But after this experience, I have started perceiving science as a living, breathing force that shapes our world in real time. Witnessing advanced marine research at JAMSTEC, coding robots at the TEPIA museum, and exploring the future at Miraikan Museum made me realize that science is not confined to textbook, but it is a tool for change, a bridge between dreams and reality.

Japan left a lasting imprint on my heart—not only through its technological brilliance but also through its serene temples, thoughtful traditions, and harmonious lifestyle. The visit to the Asakusa Sensoji Temple and the lecture by Professor Yogi helped me appreciate the delicate blend of spirituality and modernity that defines Japanese life. It was a reminder that progress and heritage can coexist beautifully.

Interacting with students from across the globe—each passionate and unique—taught me that collaboration across cultures is key to solving global challenges. I cherish the friendships I formed and the collective vision we shared for a sustainable, inclusive world. The drone coding session at the TEPIA Museum especially, was a vivid example of how science education, when paired with teamwork, transcends language and cultural barriers.
Performing Kathak, India’s classical dance form at the closing ceremony was not just a performance; it was a tribute to our rich Indian culture and a celebration of global unity. That evening, surrounded by young minds and supportive mentors, I felt truly inspired and empowered.

This program has broadened my horizons, both intellectually and emotionally. It has ignited in me a stronger resolve to pursue scientific research and to contribute meaningfully to society. I carry with me not just knowledge, but a renewed sense of purpose.

Thank you, Japan Science and Technology Agency and the Sakura Science High School Program, for believing in the power of youth, for nurturing curiosity, and for opening my eyes to the boundless possibilities of science and humanity.
