Ohayou gozaimasu~ Hi everyone!
My name is Alvin Vigo Pratama, but you can simply call me by Alvin. I'm from Indonesia, and in January 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Sakura Science Programme (SSP) at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) in Japan. This program was a defining moment in my academic journey and easily the highlight of my college years.
During my time at NAIST, I interned in the Software Engineering Laboratory, where I was immersed in a vibrant research environment. The experience was both intense and enlightening. I was able to work alongside leading researchers and fellow students, engaging in hands-on projects that expanded my understanding of software engineering in ways I hadn't imagined.
One of the most significant aspects of this experience was the exposure to advanced software engineering concepts, particularly those involving Python. Before this program, my studies had only skimmed the surface of these topics, focusing more on theoretical aspects. However, at NAIST, I was able to dive into practical applications, working on real-world problems that challenged me to think critically and creatively. I gained invaluable experience in coding, debugging, and optimizing software, skills that have become essential to my development as an engineer.
Beyond the technical knowledge, this experience also broadened my cultural horizons. Being in Japan allowed me to witness and appreciate the unique intersection of tradition and innovation that defines Japanese society. From the meticulous attention to detail in research to the respect for collective effort and harmony in the workplace, I learned lessons that go far beyond the laboratory.
The short duration of the program only intensified the learning experience. Each day was packed with new challenges, discoveries, and interactions that left a lasting impact on me. It was eye-opening to see how much could be accomplished in such a limited time frame when surrounded by motivated peers and under the guidance of experienced mentors.
Before this experience, I had followed a different path in software engineering than what I encountered at NAIST. However, this exposure to new ideas and methodologies ignited a passion in me to delve deeper into the field, particularly in areas related to ICT. I left NAIST with a renewed sense of purpose and curiosity, eager to continue exploring the vast possibilities that software engineering offers. In summary, my time at NAIST through the Sakura Science Programme was transformative. It not only enhanced my technical skills but also broadened my perspective on both technology and culture. The experience has had a profound influence on my career aspirations, and I am more motivated than ever to pursue excellence in the field of software engineering.
Recently, I have graduated from university and am currently working as a corporate employee. Although my 'journey of learning' is temporarily on hold, I still dream of further exploration in this field. I hope to have the opportunity to pursue a master's degree in Japan, as I fell in love with every aspect of the country during my time in the Sakura Science Programme.
I also currently serve as the Event and Project Coordinator for JST’s Sakura Alumni Association in Indonesia (SAAI). Despite my busy schedule, I do my best to be helpful, build networks, and share knowledge with other alumni through SAAI.
Thank you, arigatou gozaimasu!!
