Meet Nobel Laureates in Japan:
A Rare Opportunity for Young Researchers and How to Join

Studying and conducting postdoctoral research in Japan not only opens doors to advanced science and technology but also provides rare opportunities to meet and engage with Nobel Laureates from around the world. One of the most unforgettable moments during my time in Japan was participating in the JSPS HOPE Meeting, a prestigious annual event hosted by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). In 2024, it was held in Kyoto and brought together 102 selected young researchers from across the Asia-Pacific region to interact directly with Nobel Laureates. I was fortunate to be mentored by them, learning firsthand how to conduct impactful research, what it takes to reach global recognition, and how to stay inspired throughout the scientific journey. I was also honored to receive one of the Best Presenter Awards at the event.
The HOPE Meeting is more than just a conference, it’s a week-long immersive experience that includes research presentations, collaborative problem-solving workshops, one-on-one mentoring sessions with Nobel Laureates, visits to renowned Japanese research centers, and cultural exchange events. I strongly encourage all Sakura Science alumni who are currently PhD students or early-career researchers to apply. This program is a golden chance to expand your global network, improve your communication and research skills, and gain valuable insights from some of the world’s most distinguished scientists.
How to Join the HOPE Meeting
The HOPE Meeting is open to outstanding PhD students and early-career researchers (within 5 years of receiving their PhD), currently enrolled or affiliated with universities or research institutions. There are two ways to apply:
- 1. Participants in Japan: If you’re affiliated with a Japanese institution, you can apply as a “Participant from Japan.” Applications typically close in September with selection results announced by December. Please note that guidelines are available in Japanese only.
- 2. International Participants: Those based overseas must apply through their country’s designated Overseas Nominating Institution, which submits candidate recommendations to JSPS. The process usually runs from June to December.
Applicants are required to submit documents including abstracts and meeting reports, and full participation in all meeting activities is mandatory.
