I view my participation in the Sakura Science Program (SSP) to Hamamatsu, Japan, as a very enriching and memorable experience that considerably extended my academic and cultural outlook. Within eight days, I was able not only to get acquainted with the advanced research environment and distinguished faculty members but also to be immersed in Japanese culture, which will meaningfully contribute to my personal and professional growth.

My journey was filled with expectation as I began the long flight from Bengaluru to Nagoya. That long flight was almost forgotten immediately upon my arrival at Chubu International Airport, greeted warmly by Satoh-sensei himself. His hospitality and all the nice arrangements for the group made our transition into Japanese life smooth and successful. The next day, when we traveled to Hamamatsu, he also hosted a welcome session with his students, which immediately gave us a sense of ease and bonding while interacting informally, helping us appreciate the spirit of cultural exchange.

Equally important was the academic component of the program. At Shizuoka University, we were taken through current research in the field of silicon photodetectors and surface plasmon antennas. The presentations by Satoh-sensei and the orientation sessions helped us understand the background and objectives of the research. The visits to the laboratories and hands-on sessions offered practical insight into topics such as electrical characterization of nanodevices, clean room fabrication, and the FDTD method. Observing gold deposition on silicon wafers and learning about the microscopic behavior of photodiodes were particularly fascinating experiences that enhanced my interest in nanotechnology and semiconductor device engineering.

Beyond academics, the program included visits to Yamaha Innovation Road and Suzuki Plaza that showed Japan's remarkable progress in engineering, design, and technology. Walking through exhibits from historical machinery to advanced mobility solutions gave a deeper appreciation of how innovation grows over decades through dedicated research and commitment to quality. These visits also highlighted the close relationship between industry and academia in Japan—a model that I found inspiring.

Equally unforgettable were the cultural experiences interspersed within the program. Be it the city of Hamamatsu, lunches, and dinners with our mentors, or the farewell dinner, each moment was a reflection of the warmth in Japan, discipline, and attention to detail. These interactions created a friendly environment that made the whole experience both educational and personally meaningful.

Getting this certificate from Satoh-sensei on the final day was a moment of pride, signifying knowledge acquired and bonds formed. Traveling back to India, I knew I was carrying with me not only technical insight and research exposure but a deeper sense of Japanese culture, work ethic, and kindness. The Sakura Science Program was, in general, an enriching experience that widened my academic horizons, strengthened my motivation for research, and inspired me toward pursuing opportunities for international collaboration in the future. I would like to sincerely thank Shizuoka University, JST, and my mentors for making this journey truly unforgettable.
