Grateful to be part of the Sakura Science Program-SSP 2024!
I am a Ph.D. student in Mechanical Engineering at IIT Bombay, working on the development and microstructural mechanics of lightweight materials. In September 2024, I had the privilege of participating in the SSP organized by JST, which offered a well-structured blend of academic immersion, industry visits, and cultural experiences.
The program began with an orientation session in Kyoto, after which we visited several engineering laboratories at Kyoto University. Interacting with faculty and researchers gave me valuable insights into their advanced facilities, research culture, and ongoing work in materials science—directly relevant to my doctoral research.
One of the most memorable parts of the program was our visit to the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA). Dr. Kelvin Hui, explained the cutting-edge research activities taking place at the iPS cell research facility. His detailed overview of the research structure, long-term goals, and interdisciplinary collaborations provided an inspiring perspective on how large-scale scientific projects are executed in Japan.
Our visit to Osaka University further expanded this academic exposure. We also toured HORIBA, a leading global enterprise in precision manufacturing and scientific instrumentation, where we learned about their innovations and quality-driven engineering practices. A visit to the Shimadzu Foundation Memorial Museum offered historical context on Japan's scientific growth and industrial evolution.
In addition to the technical engagements, the program incorporated rich cultural experiences. Exploring Kyoto, including a visit to the iconic Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), allowed us to appreciate the cultural heritage that forms an integral part of Japan's identity. Throughout the program, our guide Ms. Kyoko Kitamura played a crucial role in ensuring smooth coordination. Her constant support, clear communication, and attention to detail made navigating the schedule effortless and enjoyable for everyone.
This week-long exchange significantly broadened my global research perspective and strengthened my long-term aspiration to collaborate with Japanese universities and industries, especially in advanced material design and lightweight structures. I am deeply grateful to JST and the program coordinators for organizing such an enriching and memorable experience.
