How the Sakura Science Exchange Programme Changed My Life

The Sakura Science Exchange Programme (SSP)was more than just an academic or cultural trip—it was a turning point that reshaped my ambitions and set me on the path toward my current studies in Japan. Looking back now, exactly one year after attending the programme, I can confidently say that it was the spark that guided me to pursue my master’s degree at Yokohama National University (YNU) through the MEXT scholarship.

When I first attended the SSP, I was fascinated by Japan’s seamless balance between tradition and technological advancement. The programme offered me a glimpse into Japan’s world-class research environment in the universities. The interactions with professors and students left a lasting impression on me.

Among the many experiences during the programme, the visit to Kyoto remains the most memorable. Kyoto, to me, was more than a destination—it was something refreshing. It made me realize that Japan was not just a place I admired for its technology; it was a country whose values, aesthetics, and way of life resonated deeply with me which eventually made me come to Japan.

After returning to my home country, I carried this inspiration with me. The experience motivated me to pursue higher studies in Japan, determined to contribute to its vibrant research community. Over the following months, I prepared diligently for the MEXT scholarship application, refining my research goals with a focus on robotics and human–machine collaboration.

Exactly one year later, that dream became a reality when I was selected for the MEXT scholarship to pursue my master’s degree at Yokohama National University. Today, I am pursuing my Master’s in Mechanical Engineering in the domain of Industrial Robotics at YNU. The exposure I gained through the programme continues to influence my research approach—particularly in understanding the balance between technological innovation and human-centered design.

SSP not only opened academic doors for me but also gave me a new perspective on life. It taught me the value of cultural understanding, humility, and collaboration across borders. Most importantly, it helped me find a sense of belonging in Japan—a country that now plays a central role in my personal and professional growth. The programme didn’t just change my career path; it changed how I see the world.
