My name is Pema Tobgay, and I am from Bhutan. I had the opportunity to visit Hokkaido in March 2025 during the final year of my Bachelor’s degree, which was also my first time traveling outside my country. This experience was particularly memorable as it was the first time I saw and experienced snow, an event that marked the beginning of a broader personal and academic journey.

During my time in Hokkaido, I was introduced to key societal and environmental topics, most notably public ageing, a challenge that Japan has been addressing through inclusive policies, advanced technology, and community-based approaches. Learning about how an ageing society is supported through thoughtful planning and innovation greatly expanded my understanding of sustainability beyond environmental aspects alone. In addition, being immersed in Japan’s unique culture, technological advancement, and the discipline and warmth of its people left a lasting impression on me and shaped my appreciation for Japan’s holistic approach to development.

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, which provided me with a strong academic foundation in sustainability, environmental management, and climate-related issues. Currently, I am working as an Associate Intern at Terrama a Sustainability Consultancy, where I am gaining practical exposure to sustainability advisory work and real-world applications of environmental policies and strategies. Through this role, I have developed a growing interest in market-based climate solutions and collaborative approaches to sustainability.

Inspired by my experiences in Japan and the collaborative values emphasized through SSP, I am keen to explore how these learnings can be applied in Bhutan. At present, Bhutan does not have alumni related activities or formal associations. I would like to propose the formation of an SSP Alumni led alumni association in Bhutan as a platform for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and future collaboration.

Looking ahead, I am also keen to explore opportunities in Japan to pursue a Master’s degree in the future. My experience in Hokkaido strengthened my motivation to further my studies in Japan, particularly in fields related to sustainability, environmental policy, or climate action. I believe that advanced academic training in Japan would allow me to deepen my expertise while continuing to learn from a country that effectively integrates tradition, technology, and sustainability.

Overall, my experience in Hokkaido and through SSP was transformative. It broadened my worldview, strengthened my professional aspirations, and encouraged me to think beyond disciplinary boundaries. The lessons I gained continue to guide my personal growth and future plans.
