I’m really grateful to have received the invitation from SSC, which gives me a chance to look back on my experience with the SSP program. I want to sincerely thank JST for giving us the opportunity to visit Japan, and also, Professor Hashimoto and everyone at Gunma University for making our time there so meaningful, from helping with transportation and accommodation to providing great learning opportunities. I truly appreciate it.

We arrived in Tokyo in November 2024. When we landed, Professor Hashimoto had already been waiting for us. We reached Kiryu (in Gunma Prefecture) around 8 a.m. local time and then spent several days learning and interacting with local experts and students. During that time, we visited the Subaru car factory and explored traditional Japanese architecture. Since we didn’t go sightseeing in Tokyo immediately, I ended up developing a special fondness for the countryside—it was peaceful and quiet, almost like being back in childhood. Even though we spoke different languages, people’s faces felt familiar and welcoming.

Later, we went to Tokyo, but honestly, it didn’t impress me as much as Kiryu did. I kept thinking about the learning experiences and the interactions in Kiryu. Even a year later, I can still recall so many details from the SSP program. After returning to China, I considered pursuing a PhD or working in Japan, but with my Japanese at roughly N4 level and the costs of living and studying, I had to put that plan on hold. Still, I believe that someday I’ll have another chance to return.
