JST Sakura Science Program2017 at ERI
Report from Tokyo University
In 2017, we invited 12 Asian students for short summer internship program at Earthquake Research Institute (ERI), the University of Tokyo, with support of SAKURA Exchange Program in Science of Japan Science Technology Agency (JST).
12 fresh students came from China, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan, arriving on July 2 and leaving on July 22.
During their visit, they mostly dedicated their time on their own researches with their host research staff at ERI. Research topics include rupture process of 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake, seismic slip budget evaluation in Northeast Japan, attenuation in the inner core, subseafloor hydrothermal circulation, tsunami modeling, structure of subducted seamounts, strong motion simulation, seismic potential in southern Java, earthquake mechanism off Hyuga-nada, seismic noise analysis, interferometry SAR analysis, and lithospheric structure of western Sunda arc.
They made poster presentations on July 20, followed by a closing ceremony hosted by the director of ERI.
During a weekend (July 15-16) we took them to a field trip to the Tohoku region. They visited Arahama elementary school (abandoned due to the 2011 tsunami but preserved as the tsunami monument),
Matsushima, Rikuzen-Takada (2011 miracle pine tree site),
Matsurube fallen bridge (2008 Iwate-Miyagi earthquake),
and Kurikoma active volcano.
On July 17, some of them visited JAMSTEC’s drilling vessel ‘Chikyu’.
