The program also sought to deepen understanding and improve disaster response capacities that may be required in their own country. Open Application Program University Vietnam Course A vol.7 FY2025Okayama University "Research Exchange with Young Indian Researchers on the Theme of Fundamentals, Environmental Adaptation, and Applications of Photosynthesis" We invited eight young researchers and graduate students from Nagaland University and related institutions in Nagaland, India and implemented a course A program. Despite being a short-term program, we were able to conduct meaningful academic exchange on the fundamentals, environmental adaptation, and applications of photosynthesis at both Okayama University and Kyoto University. The participants also had valuable opportunities to experience Japanese culture and history in Okayama and Kyoto. Open Application Program University India Course A vol.6 FY2025Nagasaki University "Membrane Separation Technology Training for Safe Water Production from Contaminated Water Sources" The Nagasaki University welcomed eight participants to Nagasaki from Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia, University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi; and Chiang Mai University, Thailand. This program, conducted through collaboration between industry, academia, and government, provided training on Japan's advanced water treatment technology, with the goal of enhancing the participants' membrane separation technology skills and preparing them for a return to Japan as researchers or engineers. Open Application Program University Indonesia Vietnam Thailand Course C vol.5 FY2025Tokyo University of Science "Sustainable Urban Disaster Prevention Considering Multi-Hazard Risks" From August 21 to 27, 2025, we hosted a delegation from SRM Institute of Science and Technology in India, consisting of seven students and one faculty member. The program aimed to nurture future disaster management experts capable of addressing the growing global challenges of natural disasters. Through lectures, facility visits, and workshops, participants deepened their understanding of disaster prevention from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Open Application Program University India Course A vol.4 FY2025Kyushu University "From Kyushu to North Africa: Interdisciplinary Exchange Program on Sustainable Agriculture and Agritourism" Agriculture continues to be a cornerstone of the economies of Morocco and Tunisia, yet rural areas in both countries face pressing challenges, including economic disparities with urban centers, depopulation, and an aging population as younger generations migrate to cities. To address these issues, a one-week exchange program was organized at Kyushu University, welcoming four students and faculty members from Al Akhawayn University (Morocco) and the Mediterranean School of Business (Tunisia). Open Application Program University Morocco Tunisia Course A vol.3 FY2025Hokkaido University "Training on the Advances of Digital Technologies in Food and Health Science Research for Global Well Being" From September 21 to 30, twelve participants from four institutions in India—the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, the University of Mysore, D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune, and the Central Food Technological Research Institute—took part in the program. To ensure that students from all disciplines benefited, interdisciplinary laboratory training sessions were organized daily, covering areas such as life science, food science, environmental science, chemistry, and medical AI. Open Application Program University India Course C vol.2 FY2025Kwansei Gakuin University "Clean Air Project — Protecting the Smiles and Health of Children in India" As part of the Sakura Science Program: Joint Research Activities, we welcomed Smriti and seven students from Amity University and Biyani Girls College to Japan from July 21 to August 1, 2025. During their 12-day stay, they joined TANAKA Hirohisa laboratory at Kwansei Gakuin University, where they synthesized and evaluated automotive catalysts. They also visited HORIBA’s Shiga E-Harbor and Daihatsu’s Ikeda Plant, where they observed industrial practices designed to improve air quality. Open Application Program University India Course B FY2025 vol.1 FY2025Shizuoka University "Exchange program related to research and development of silicon photodetector with surface plasmon antenna" Assist. Prof. Anitharaj Nagarajan and 7 bachelor students of Global Academy of Technology (GAT), Bengaluru, India have been invited to Research Institute of Electronics, Shizuoka University (SU), Hamamatsu, Japan from Aug. 3 to 9. We would like to express our gratitude to this JST-SSP for their support and the wonderful opportunity to establish the strong collaboration between GAT and SU. We are hoping to strengthen exchanges of students/professors through the continued collaboration. Open Application Program University India Course A vol.39 FY2024Kyoto Prefectural University "Report on the Sakura Science Program at Kyoto Prefectural University" We welcomed two students from Paraná State Western University in Brazil (UNIOESTE) and one researcher from the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI). This program offered a rich and diverse schedule combining laboratory training, educational visits, cultural exchange, and industry engagement. The participants returned home not only with enhanced scientific capabilities but also with a renewed appreciation for international cooperation and multicultural exchange. Open Application Program University Brazil Bangladesh Course B vol.38 FY2024National Agriculture and Food Research Organization "International exchange to learn how to control plant virus diseases for sustainable food supply" There has been a notable increase in the spread of plant virus diseases and their vectors, which may be attributable to global warming and international trade. Given that the prevention of the introduction and spread of new viral diseases cannot be achieved by Japan alone, we should promote international collaboration and the exchange of knowledge. We have implemented the program with the aim of extending an invitation to staff members and PhD students from the WUR to encourage the exchange of information and research collaboration between Japan and Europe on plant virus diseases.
