フィリピン大学マニラ校からの10名の医学生と早産対策について研究交流
大阪府立母子保健総合医療センター
2015年2月19日～28日の10日間、フィリピン大学マニラ校のMDおよびPhDコースの学生9名と教員1名（Nina Gloriani教授）を、さくらサイエンスプログラムの支援を受けて日本に招聘しました。
大阪府立母子保健総合医療センターは、WHO（世界保健機構）の西太平洋地区の周産期分野における指定研究協力センターに指定され、周産期分野における調査研究、発展途上国を中心とした海外の保健医療従事者の研修などを行っています。
世界規模で増加する早産およびその合併症は時に致死的で、WHOの推計では年間100万人の子供が早産に関連して死亡しています。本研究交流の主な目的は、研究所免疫部門（柳原格部長）が行っている早産起因微生物の同定技術や解析方法をフィリピン大学マニラ校の医師および医師を目指す学生に学んでもらい、アジアにおける早産対策の研究拠点を形成することにあります。
研究所では難培養性細菌の培養、細菌遺伝子の増幅による菌種および血清型同定、宿主細胞への感染実験を行い、また病院検査科では細菌検査をはじめとする自動化機器類の見学など、感染症制御に向けたより実践的な交流事業を行いました。
病院見学
放射線治療を行う子供たちのために工夫された治療室への回廊と子供用CTスキャン。その他、新生児集中治療室や、検査科を見学しました。
ヒト病原菌を用いた実習
医療者が自らを守るための基本技術を実習しました。感染症（柳原格部長）の他、質量分析学（和田芳直研究所所長）、発生学（松尾勲部長）、培養細胞実験（道上敏美部長）等、他部門が得意とする最先端技術についても学びました。
SNP解析
DNA塩基配列の個人差を解析します。留学生が指導しました。科学が世界共通言語であるということを改めて実感しました。
ヒト細胞に感染する細菌の蛍光顕微鏡観察
1mmの10,000分の１程度大きさの微生物を観察することができました。
IFReC谷口記念講堂前にて
当センター研究所は大阪大学の連携大学院でもあります。大阪大学微生物研究所・BIKENにおけるワクチン開発の最新情報（吉岡靖雄先生）や、細菌ゲノム解析施設見学（飯田哲也先生）、小児科見学（酒井規夫先生）、産婦人科での講義（熊澤恵一先生）など、関連分野の多くの知識を学びました。

This exchange program is the best experience I ever had and I will be forever grateful for it. This experience has inspired me to work hard to be a good researcher and a compassionate, competent and emphatic physician in the future.

Rest assured that we will use all of the experiences we had in Japan to be great physician-scientists in the future.
We were able to tour around those high-end research facilities, experience laboratory techniques we just usually read in our journal discussion, observe how the doctors and nurses tend for their patients, and witness how they still value human care despite the abundance of sophisticated machines and equipment.
This brief visit to Japan made me realize that my job as a Filipino MD-PhD student does not end with just graduating and publishing research papers. I need to give an active contribution for the advancement of my nation. I must engage myself in research and medical practices that is relevant to the country. Honestly, I am quite jealous with the facilities and advancement of Japan.
But I am very hopeful that one day, the Philippines can have the same development as what I have seen in Japan. However, there must be someone who will keep the ball rolling, who will initiate and continue the change in the Philippines. I may be too idealistic, but I am determined to give my contributions to the advancement of my nation, especially in terms of science.
