SAKURA SCIENCE High School Program Group 1
Special Lecture by Dr. KAJITA and Exchange with High School Students
On Thursday, May 22, a total of 95 high school students and supervisors in SSHP Group 6 (China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam) visited Tokai University Takanawadai High School. The school is designated as a Super Science High School, which focuses on science and mathematics education.
After the welcome ceremony, SSHP high school students were divided into 30 small groups to experience two workshops with Japanese high school students. In the program titled "A Request from Dr. D., " participants were challenged with a difficult request: "I have developed a technology that turns sound into light, and I want you to commercialize it! " The students shared their opinions and worked together to create products.
Next was an enjoyable performance by the brass band, a large ensemble of 150 members. The members have numerous accomplishments, including gold medals in music competitions, and they performed a series of songs popular in Southeast Asia such as "Koisuru Fortune Cookie" by AKB48.
In the afternoon the students attended a special lecture titled "My Research on Neutrinos and Gravitational Waves, " by Dr. KAJITA Takaaki, Nobel Laureate in Physics for his discovery of neutrino oscillations. The professor introduced his high school life and explained in an easy-to-understand manner why he decided to pursue a career in research, as well as his research on Super-Kamiokande for neutrino observation and the KAGURA telescope for direct observation of gravitational waves. Finally, he shared a message with the high school students: "It takes time to reach a conclusion on anything, including research. " He continued, "The more difficult it becomes, the more teamwork is needed.
Although it was only one day, the SSHP students and Japanese students quickly got to know each other, and the SSHP students left the school with fond memories.
