Activity Report of Open Application Program 2025 vol.38 (Course A)
Solving Future Challenges with Semiconductors and Quantum Technology
Report from Osaka Prefectural Senri Senior High School
Osaka Prefectural Senri Senior High School hosted students and faculty from the National Experimental High School at Central Taiwan Science Park (NEHS).
The two schools share a 10-year history of international exchange. With the theme "Solving Future Challenges with Semiconductors and Quantum Technology" this program served as the final phase to deepen the results of collaborative research. This follows a visit to Taiwan by Senri students last December and online joint research conducted since October.
[Day 1 & 2] Cultural Immersion and Quantum Mechanics
The program began with a three-night homestay, allowing Taiwanese students to experience Japanese daily life and traditional events such as Hinamatsuri, or Doll's Day Festival. On the second day, students conducted preliminary experiments on quantum computing at Senri High School. Utilizing polarizing plates and the IBM Quantum platform, they bridged the gap between high school physics and advanced computational logic.
[Day 3] Industrial Visits: ROHM and Kyocera
On the third day, students visited the headquarters of ROHM Co. Ltd and Kyocera Corporation in Kyoto. At ROHM Co., Ltd., students attended lectures on semiconductor manufacturing and participated in career talks with professionals from various departments. This provided a practical perspective on how specialized knowledge is integrated into global business. At Kyocera Corporation, students visited the "Kyocera Fine Ceramics Museum" and the "Inamori Library," learning about material science evolution and management philosophy.
[Day 4] Research Presentations and Academic Discussion
The fourth day marked the presentation of joint research projects. Students analyzed cross-cultural differences in topics such as biodiversity (e.g., bear conservation efforts) and public health (e.g., sugar content in beverages). In the afternoon, graduate students from The University of Osaka and Kobe University facilitated a discussion on "How AI Will Change Future Careers." This session emphasized the importance of using English as a tool for logical scientific communication. The day concluded with an astronomical observation session led by the Science Club.
[Day 5-7] Advanced Research and Conclusion
On the fifth day, the delegation visited Kobe University's Integrated Research Center. Professor MIKI Takuji provided a lecture on quantum computing, followed by a tour of the laboratory's cryogenic cooling systems. Students engaged with university researchers to discuss the technical challenges of maintaining quantum states. The program concluded on the seventh day with a final presentation session and the awarding of JST completion certificates. This exchange established a foundation for future international academic collaboration between the two schools.
