Activity Report of Open Application Program 2025 vol.28 (Course A)
Experiencing Advanced Nursing Practice and Research Collaboration in Japan's Tele-ICU System
Report from Nursing course, School of Medicine, Yokohama City University
From January 13 to 19, 2026, Yokohama City University hosted ten students and one faculty member from Hasanuddin University, Indonesia, under the JST Sakura Science Program. The program, titled “Experiencing Advanced Nursing Practice and Research Collaboration in Japan's Tele-ICU System” provided opportunities for participants to observe, experience, and learn about Japan's advanced healthcare and nursing practices through lectures, hospital visits, and student exchanges.
■Visits to Affiliated Hospitals
At Yokohama City University Hospital, participants attended a lecture on the role and training of perianesthesia nurses, followed by a tour of the operating rooms. They learned about the university's early efforts in training these specialized nurses and observed how nurses collaborate autonomously with anesthesiologists. The visit also included an introduction to the da Vinci surgical robot and the Tele-ICU system, which attracted great interest from the participants.
At the Yokohama City University Medical Center, participants observed a preoperative outpatient clinic led by peri anesthesia nurses and visited the tertiary emergency care unit, gaining a deeper understanding of Japan's systematic healthcare and emergency medical systems.
■Joint Lectures and Workshop
During the joint lecture and workshop, lectures and group discussions were held on the current status and challenges of advanced medical care and nursing practice in both countries, promoting mutual understanding.
After the presentations, a student-led farewell party was held. An English word association game and Japanese style hospitality created a warm and friendly atmosphere.
The visiting students also performed a traditional Indonesian dance, which impressed both students and faculty members. Finally, certificates of completion were presented to each participant from Hasanuddin University.
■Introduction to Nursing Education and Research
Participants joined a graduate seminar and toured the Nursing Education and Research Building, gaining insights into Japan's nursing education and research environment. They were particularly interested in the presence of laboratory facilities within the nursing school, which highlighted the role of basic research in nursing science.
Faculty members introduced research topics including chemotherapy-related side effects, critical care nursing, and studies using AI and ultrasound technologies. The sessions generated lively discussions, and some participants expressed interest in pursuing graduate studies in Japan.
■Field Trip in Tokyo
On the final day, participants visited several locations in Tokyo, where they experienced Japan's urban culture and scientific environment.
Overall, the program deepened participants' understanding of Japan's advanced medical technologies and high-quality healthcare systems. It also fostered meaningful academic exchange and raised expectations for future study opportunities and potential Joint Degree Programs between the two universities.
