Activity Report of Open Application Program 2025 vol.11 (Course A)

Promoting Interdisciplinary Education through the Integration of Earth Science and Cultural Heritage

Report from Shimane University

The Sakura Science Program at Shimane University concluded successfully after an enriching week that blended scientific exchange, geological fieldwork, and cultural immersion. Hosted by Dr. Silpa A. S. from the Department of Earth Sciences, the program welcomed Dr. Ratheesh Kumar R.T. and six graduate students from the Department of Marine Geology and Geophysics at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), India.

The program centered on interdisciplinary learning and hands-on geological research, with participants exploring the scenic volcanic islands of Matsue City- Katsurajima and Daikonjima. These islands, renowned for their striking volcanic landscapes and rich geological history, provided an ideal natural laboratory for observing and analyzing volcanic activity and coastal geomorphology.

The participants indulged in studying the origin and evolution of the Japanese islands, the opening of the Japan Sea, and the complex tectonic framework surrounding it. Japan, a relatively young island arc system formed about 15–20 million years ago, contrasts sharply with India, which is part of an ancient continental crust dating back over 3 billion years. This stark difference offered participants a unique opportunity to learn an entirely new tectonic setting. Beyond scientific exploration, participants engaged deeply with Japan's cultural heritage. Visits to Matsue Castle and the majestic Izumo Taisha Shrine-one of Japan's oldest and most revered shrines- offered a unique opportunity to experience serene spaces harmoniously integrated with nature.

One of the highlights was the visit to Inasa no Hama Beach, a site where geology, breathtaking landscapes, and mythology coexist in perfect harmony. The beach, with its striking coastal formations and sweeping views of the Sea of Japan, is deeply rooted in Shinto mythology as the place where deities are believed to gather. This unique blend of natural beauty and cultural significance offered participants a profound experience, illustrating how Japan's geological history and spiritual traditions are intertwined.

The program also featured an interactive cultural exchange session with Japanese students. During this lively event, the visitors were introduced to traditional Japanese games such as kendama, while Japanese students learned to write their names in four Indian languages, including Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu. This activity fostered mutual appreciation of linguistic and cultural diversity, creating a warm and engaging atmosphere that strengthened personal connections beyond academic collaboration.

During the workshop, they presented their findings on geological aspects, shared cultural insights, and reflected on their impressions of Japan. They also discussed how this program would influence their future research, careers, and personal growth.

The Sakura Science Program supported by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), continues to serve as a vital platform for cultivating the next generation of leaders in science and technology. This Shimane University edition highlighted the integration of earth and marine sciences and underscored the value of experiential learning within the context of nature and culture. At the program's conclusion, participants expressed heartfelt gratitude for this invaluable opportunity and shared their aspirations to apply the knowledge and connections gained during their stay in Japan to future research endeavors.
