Thinking about graduate students at the Indian Institute of Science and the third innovation ecosystem
Report from Fujiwara Takao, Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Toyohashi University of Technology
On December 9, 2019, we welcomed our visitors at the Chubu Centrair International Airport and sent them back on December 15, the same year. We invited 10 graduate students, 7 PhD course students (including 3 female students) and 3 master's students (including 0 female students) from the Department of Management Studies of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The object of the theme was to compare venture ecosystems such as the automotive subcontracting manufacturing cluster in Toyota City from the characteristics of the location of this university, the manufacturing venture cluster such as photo-engineering and the like in Hamamatsu City, and software companies in Bangalore, where IISc is located, in particular to explore and propose a third industrial ecosystem that is complementary to the venture ecosystem and the manufacturing subcontracted ecosystem.

December 10 (Tue):
An off-campus training trip to the central research institute at Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. in Hamamatsu City and the Suzuki Kosai Plant was scheduled to expose our visitors to the atmosphere of Japan's Silicon Valley in Hamamatsu City.
December 14 (Sat):
Our participants toured the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology and got to experience a manufacturing shift from textiles to automobiles in Aichi Prefecture as the country's extremely concentrated manufacturing point.
In the afternoon of the same day, our visitors toured Honmaru Palace in Nagoya Castle and became more acquainted with traditional Japanese culture.
From December 11 (Wed) to December 13 (Fri):
The graduate students from both universities gave research presentations in the school, gave presentations in classes "Finance" and "Real Options" and held discussions with students, toured within the cleanroom of the In-school semiconductor research facility EIIRIS, and discussed the fundamentals leading-edge challenges of MOT.
While a prolific and deadly method in thematic problem awareness has the possibility of realizing epochal ideas through venture businesses such as in the Silicon Valley, in addition to a handful of dramatically successful venture businesses, it is an inefficient innovation system that brings about many venture business bankruptcies. Conversely, in Toyota City's automotive industry subcontracting system, emphasis is placed on continuous and incremental improvements rather than discontinuous leaps forward, which is considered to be a less efficient, and wasteful systems. Toyohashi City, where our school is located, is halfway between Hamamatsu City, which is suitable for the creation of new industries, and Toyota City, which is suitable for the manufacture and improvement of automobiles. It is also considered to have the potential to perform the matching function of development, manufacturing and improvement.
At the presentations and discussions by the students from both countries at the seminar, the participants discussed topics such as new industrial creation, environmental energy, water resources, optimal shipping routes, real options and financial engineering, mainly using mathematical models.
IISc has only one school in Bangalore, a top school of science, and the Graduate School of Management is a business school to which it belongs. In the past, in addition to the Sakura Science Program, the university and IISc have included the results of two overseas trainings at EDGE-NEXT, two at the JSPS-ICSSR bilateral seminar, in two recordings in a special issue of a specialized overseas magazine, been accepted for postdocs by the Suzuki Foundation’s fellowship and concluded MOU in 2018.
