Students from Chiang Mai University in Thailand experience medical science and nursing education based on science and technology
Report from School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, Mie University
This time, the School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, Mie University invited seven people (6 third year students, and a leading faculty member) from the Department of Nursing Science at Chiang Mai University Thailand, from May 17th to 24th, 2018 on the theme of “Experiencing medical science and nursing education based on science and technology both in university and community healthcare” through Science and Technology Experience Course of SAKURA Exchange Program in Science, and the program started from the School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, Mie University and developed as follows, and it was possible to have useful experiences on both sides.
At the university, they first visited the Skills Laboratory (Mie University Institute of Technical Skill Education: MiT) at Mie University Hospital. MiT has established a number of simulation equipment making full use of advanced science and technology, and has various learning courses. The students of this university and the staff of the affiliated hospital have continuously contributed to medical science and nursing education. This time, similar to previous years, a visit to the dissection training of this university was included in advance, and they were able to have a sense of getting effective knowledge on physical assessment, in addition to experiencing various courses. The exchange with nurses promoting collaborative research with Thailand, and the visit to advanced facilities in the hospital was possible, with the cooperation of the nursing department of the affiliated hospital,
This university boasts the spirit of innovation in environmental science. In November 2007 all the faculties acquired ISO 14001 certification at the same time and are also maintaining the certification thereafter. The group from Chiang Mai University was able to understand the approach by making a tour of the environment and information science center at this university.
On May 18, outside the university, they visited the Kinan hospital while getting introduced to the world heritage Kumano Kodo located at the south of Kii Peninsula, when travelling by bus from Mie University in Tsu. In the same hospital, they watched the practice of medical science and nursing education for community healthcare support, utilizing various IT equipment in cooperation with this university. They received a lecture in the English language from Doctor Shinnosuke Morimoto, Department of Internal Medicine of the same hospital, on disaster medical care in the hospital / region, as a countermeasure for the Tonankai earthquake. After this, they visited Kiho town in the Asari district that suffered great damage due to major flooding in the Kii Peninsula in September 2011. This district was designated as one of the chosen districts in Japan, and it regained its original beauty seven years from the disaster. This time, they got an opportunity to hear directly from the local residents about the situation at that time and the restoration support after that.

On the 19th, they toured Welfare 2018, the 21st International Welfare and Health Industry Exhibition. It is an exhibition related to international welfare and health held at this time every year at Portmesse Nagoya (Nagoya International Exhibition Hall) in Nagoya city, Aichi prefecture. This year also, they were able to listen to an explanation from the developer in English, and experience Honda's wearable robot device.
On the 20th, they visited the prefectural museum to study the history and culture of Mie prefecture, together with the students of this university. They received an explanation on the exhibition contents in the English language from the Director and were able to get exposure to working on specimens. After visiting the museum, the students and faculty members of both universities enjoyed making okonomiyaki, in the courtyard of the nursing department building, and deepened the international experience of culture and history on that Sunday.
Through such exchanges, the graduate students from the Department of Nursing at Chiang Mai University who were greatly interested in Japan, received consultation on studying abroad at Mie University.
