Japan-Korea exchange to gain the wisdom needed to protect Japan's natural environment
Report from Tokyo City University
One faculty member and nine students from Kyung Hee University in Korea were invited, for a period of 1 week from February 6th to 12th, 2018, to participate in a seminar and a field survey at the Tokyo City University Yokohama Campus, on the important theme of “Gain the wisdom needed to protect Japan's natural environment” This hands-on exchange program was carried out to study the survey of the water environment, survey methods, current situations, and countermeasures.

Tour of Japanese advanced technology and facilities
They visited the environment-friendly campus that made full use of advanced technology and the Tokyo City University Yokohama Campus that was certified for the first time in Japan with the International Environmental Standard ISO 14001.
They were guided in learning about efforts to reduce environmental impacts by always recognizing environmental aspects, evaluating environment impacts, preventing environmental pollution, and taking a proactive stance to address resource and energy conservation, resource recycling, waste reduction, proper management of chemical substances, and promotion of continuous improvement.
They also visited the biotope which actualized excellent landscape, a re-greening technology test station for artificial surfaces using the system of the Tokyo City University, green curtain, other green infrastructure (Green space), university library, gymnasium, lecture building, computer room, student cafeteria, student cafe and campus shop on the campus.
They visited the high-performance water quality analytical equipment room, laboratory and PM 2.5 measuring device which is advanced technology for water quality analysis, water utilization and management, wastewater treatment facility on the campus (Grease trap), rainwater harvesting equipment (incident precipitation, canopy drip), stem flow collecting device. They turned the rainwater outflow suppression facility on the campus into a tour course, visited the rainwater outflow suppression facility at the Tsuzuki ward in Yokohama city which is an advanced case to maintain the flow rate and water quality of the river for extremely limited water resources, city river, and sewer outlet of the separated sewer system. They also visited the Water Reclamation Center in Tokyo (Kita-Tama Ichigo Water Reclamation Center) an advanced example of sewage treatment indispensable in urban areas.

They visited the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation and the Sky Tree on February 11, 2018 (Sunday).
Implementation of student exchange, participation and practice program
The survey of water quality based on 9 items (air temperature, water temperature, pH, EC (electrical conductivity), nitrate ion concentration, ammonium ion concentration, phosphate ion concentration, coliform bacteria group count, coliform bacteria count) was carried out by Japanese and Korean college students of the SAKURA Exchange Program in Science, at 4 sites of the Tama river (Tama river site (Futagotamagawa), Nogawa site, reservoir point of Hyogojima Park, spillway site), a typical river in Tokyo as a successful case of water quality improvement and restoration.

The report on the results of a water quality survey by the Japanese and Korean University Students of this program was held for two days on February 8th and 9th. They were able to deepen their mutual understanding by group presentations, student exchanges and opinion exchanges with 17 undergraduates, 1 leader and 4 cooperating faculty staff of Tokyo City University.
In the completion ceremony and social gathering, each of the teaching staff and students were awarded with a certificate of completion (English and Japanese version) by Mr. Chitoshi Miki, Principal of Tokyo City University, who was responsible for implementation.
