Group A of the Third Session of the High School Student Special Course visits Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC)

The 40 members of Group A of the Third Session of the High School Student Special Course (students from the Philippines, Mongolia, Cambodia, and Malaysia) visited the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) on August 4, which was the Group’s first day in Japan.
In the morning, they visited the headquarters of JAMSTEC in Yokosuka. At the Museum of Marine Science and Technology, the members studied a full-size model of the Japanese manned research submersible “Shinkai 6500,” an experimental high-pressure water tank, and other exhibits.

In the afternoon, they visited the Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences of JAMSTEC. At the Earth Science Museum, the members learned about the oceans, the Earth, and the environment using a hemispherical screen and a 3-D screen. Moreover, they observed the “Earth Simulator,” a world-class high-performance supercomputer.
Through visual presentations, the high school students could directly experience climate change predictions as well as the effects of global warming as analyzed by the supercomputer. The students also showed great interest as they watched a simulation of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunamis.
