JAPAN-ASEAN University Exchange Meeting

On January 27, 2024, we held the "Japan-ASEAN University Exchange Meeting" in Hong Kong, China. With the goal of offering information and exchanging opinions among major universities in Japan and ASEAN countries regarding future cooperation in science, technology and innovation through human resource exchanges and training, JST projects (such as the SAKURA SCENCE Exchange Program and exchange-promotion projects between Japan and ASEAN universities), JICA and ASEAN University Network Secretariat introduced their respective initiatives. Various opinions were also expressed by participating universities in Japan and ASEAN regarding future human resource exchanges and further strengthening cooperation.

Main Remarks and Recommendations

  • Collaboration and cooperation between countries and regions in the area are important to promote the active participation of young human resources in the Asian region. Seed‑Net is a successful example.
  • It is important to develop infrastructures that allow for the internal flow of human resources, including researchers, and world-class joint research with Japan and ASEAN.
  • It is also important to return research results to society through innovation from basic research; we look forward to cooperation between Japanese industries and ASEAN startups.
  • Human resource development is an important issue. There is a benefit from cooperation with Japan. It is necessary to continue and to utilize systems such as Seed‑Net.
