Experience Exchange to Learn Japan's Advanced Molecular Simulation Technologies in Material Science

Report from the Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Tohoku University

From November 12 to December 17, 2020, 18 graduate students and 3 faculty members of the University of Indonesia were greeted online once weekly (6 times in total). In this online exchange, with the aim of maximizing the effects of exchanges through actual invitations, we deepened our understanding of research content through laboratory introductions and presentations of results, and shared the basic knowledge required for simulation through lectures on research facilities, calculation methods, and visualization technologies. In the introduction of research and presentation of results, the dynamic behavior of molecules obtained by simulation was introduced as a video to deepen a more direct and intrinsic understanding of computing technology. Even after the online exchange, there are many inquiries directly from students about conducting research. It is thought that this exchange has a large effect because we were able continuously to engage in active discussions.

Details of each implementation are shown below.

November 12 Introduction and exchange of opinions between implementing and participating institutions
November 19 Presentation of research results, Q&A (sponsored by the implementing institute)
November 26 Presentation of research results, Q&A sessions (sponsored by participating institutions)
December 3 Lectures on the construction of a computing environment and calculation methods by the implementing organization
December 10 Lectures on visualization technology and the like by the implementing organization
December 17 Discussions and wrap−ups implemented content
  • In "Introduction and Exchange of Opinions between Implementing and Participating Institutions", advanced programming and simulation techniques in various fields were introduced from Implementing and Participating Institutions, experimental nanomaterial development was introduced from Participating Institutions, and respective research summaries were exchanged.
  • In "Presentation of Research Results, Q&A", the application of simulation technology was discussed by presenting research results and Q&A on the specific research themes (target materials) of the implementing and participating institutions over two days.
  • In "Lectures on the construction of a computing environment and calculation methods by the implementing organization", included lectures on the construction of a simple computing environment and basic computing theories and methods using the PCs of students of the participating organizations.
  • In "Lectures on Visualization Technologies from Implementing Institutions, and the like", lectures were conducted while demonstrating using animation of computational results through computer graphics technology and the creation of molecular sequence images using 3D printers, utilizing research facilities by the implementing institutions.
  • In "Discussions and wrap−ups implemented content", detailed discussions were held on the programming methods and simulation techniques according to the research themes of the participating institutions that will be conducted when invited in the future. In addition, information learned in this online exchange from students of participating organizations was summarized in a report.
